Calibrating the Mixing Length Parameter for a Red Giant Envelope

چکیده

Two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations were made to calibrate the mixing length parameter for modeling red giant’s convective envelope. As was briefly reported in Asida & Tuchman 1997, a comparison of simulations starting with models integrated with different values of the mixing length parameter, has been made. In this paper more results are presented, including tests of the spatial resolution and Large Eddy Simulation terms used by the numerical code. The consistent value of the mixing length parameter was found to be 1.4, for a red giant of mass 1.2M , core mass of 0.96M , luminosity of 200L , and metallicity Z = 0.001. Subject headings: convection — methods: numerical — stars: AGB and post-AGB — stars: atmosphere

Stellar Envelope Convection calibrated by Radiation Hydrodynamics Simulations: Influence on Globular Cluster Isochrones

One of the largest sources of uncertainty in the computation of globular cluster isochrones and hence in the age determination of globular clusters is the lack of a rigorous description of convection. Therefore, we calibrated the superadiabatic temperature gradient in the envelope of metal-poor low-mass stars according to the results from a new grid of 2D hydrodynamical models, which cover the ...

Tidal Interactions of Red Giants with Environment Stars in Globular Clusters

We investigate the tidal interactions of a red giant with a main sequence in the dense stellar core of globular clusters by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. Two models of 0.8M⊙ red giant with the surface radii 20 and 85R⊙ are used with 0.6 or 0.8M⊙ main sequence star treated as a point mass. We demonstrate that even for the wide encounters that two stars fly apart, the angular momentum o...

Magnetic Mixing in Red Giant and Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

The available information on isotopic abundances in the atmospheres of low-mass Red Giant Branch (RGB) and Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars requires that episodes of extensive mixing occur below the convective envelope, reaching down to layers close to the hydrogen burning shell (Cool Bottom Processing). Recently Busso et al. (2007) suggested that dynamo-produced buoyant magnetic flux tubes ...

An empirical calibration of the mixing - length parameter α 1 Francesco

We present an empirical calibration of the Mixing-Length free parameter α based on a homogeneous Infrared database of 28 Galactic globular clusters spanning a wide metallicity range (-2.15<[Fe/H]<-0.2). Empirical estimates of the red giant effective temperatures have been obtained from infrared colors. Suitable relations linking these temperatures to the cluster metallicity have been obtained a...
